What are commercial and retail scales used for?

Commercial and retail scales are used to determine the price for an item based on its weight, or to check that its weight is correct for the price the item is being sold for.

Retail and commercial scales perform a number of duties for checking and trading goods in commercial and food-related industries.

Do businesses require a commercial scale that is legal for trade?

If you are using the scale for buying or selling goods by weight then you will need to have a trade approved commercial scale. In South Africa, the National Regulatory of Compulsory Specifications (NRCS) currently set the regulations required for weighing devices. Some examples of businesses that require trade approved scales to operate include:

Supermarkets - For selling vegetables, fruit etc by weight.

Fishmongers - For selling fish in pounds, kilos or grams.

Butchers - For selling joints of meat including beef, lamb and pork by weight.

Cosmetics - For checking that skin creams, serums, hair products and gels meet the weight specified on the packaging.

Post - For checking the weight of parcels, letters and packages to determine shipping costs.
